The Widow's Mite

The Widow's Mite
Episode: 516
Seizoen: 5
Chris has been saving his allowance and lawn mowing money to purchase an expensive new telescope. Meanwhile, the church youth group is involved with a food drive. Chris becomes conflicted about donating money to support the food drive or sticking with his plan of buying the telescope.
Superbook arrives to take Chris, Joy and Gizmo to the Jerusalem Temple. There they meet up with Jesus' disciples while He is teaching. As they watch, a widow makes a donation into the temple treasury. She gives only two mites, but it is all she has to live on. Jesus comments that the poor woman gave more than the other wealthy contributors who gave only a tiny part of their surplus. This causes Chris to rethink his attitude about tithing to his church.
Once home, Chris wrestles with his decision, but finally comes to a place where, like the widow, he gladly donates all his money to the church mission. Marcus 12:41-44

Matthew was a tax collector whom Jesus called to be a follower. Matthew immediately left His work and hosted a banquet at his home for Jesus and invited many of his tax collector friends. Matthew became one of the twelve apostles. Matthew was sad like the other apostles when they could not cast an evil spirit out and Jesus said they lacked faith. However, as Jesus sent His disciples out, Matthew 's faith is strengthened when he and Andrew pray for a leper who is then healed! All of the disciples rejoice at their success when they return to Jesus.

Isn’t giving all the same to God as long as I do give?
Isn’t all giving the same? Does your attitude or motivation really matter to God as long as the tithe and offerings are given? 2 Corinthians 9:7 says: “You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”
The answer is yes, attitude matters—God loves a cheerful giver! How you give is a strong indicator of your spiritual heart condition. God wants you to decide in your own heart how much to give. He also wants you to give out of love, not out of obligation or pressure. Giving under those circumstances cause you to give reluctantly and grudgingly.
Jesus said in Matthew 6: 21: “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Giving shows what is really most important to you. Is it accumulating and storing up more and more possessions or treasures on this earth, or is it so you can have more to give? God wants your heart’s desire to be on Him and sharing His love and gifts He has given. When we show His generosity and love by giving, people give praises to God! (2 Corinthians 9:11)
A wealthy and dishonest tax collector named Zacchaeus perfectly illustrates a change of spiritual heart. Zacchaeus was a dishonest, greedy tax collector. After spending time with Jesus, he was forever changed. “But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” (Luke 19:1-10). Zacchaeus became a cheerful, generous giver. No one pressured or shamed Zacchaeus into giving away his money; he alone decided in his heart how much to give. He didn’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. Zacchaeus’ gave joyfully because his heart was transformed by Jesus. Isn’t that a perfect example of 2 Corinthians 9:7?
The choice is up to you. Jesus encountered another wealthy man with very different results. Thie young man came to Jesus and asked what he must do to have eternal life. He proudly told Jesus that he had kept God’s commandments all of his life. Jesus saw deep inside the man and knew he had a problem with his spiritual heart. Jesus saw that he was bound by his wealth and possessions. “Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” He told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.” (Mark 10:17-27). This man could not give at all, let alone cheerfully give... how sad!
What happens when you give generously? 2 Corinthians 9:8 says: “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” God promises to bless us as we cheerfully give. He gives us even more; not to hold onto, but to share! It should be a continual loop that that is never broken! As we give freely, we prosper even more! (Proverbs 11:24-25). Freely is another way of saying cheerfully, not out of guilt or pressure.
The Apostle Paul referred to Jesus’ words saying, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35). When we give cheerfully, our lives will be abundantly blessed by God. We won't have less, we will have even more!

Is it possible to cheat and rob God of what is His?
Can it really be possible to cheat or rob God? Think of it, He is all knowing and all powerful; it doesn’t seem possible. The truth is that you can cheat and rob God in many ways by not giving Him what He is due or worthy of. Like for example, your obedience, time, praise, worship, talents, service, which God gave you for His kingdom work. (Isaiah 42:8; Psalm 115:1; Romans 12:1).
Specifically, in the book of Malachi, God said that the people had robbed and cheated Him of their money or tithe. By cheating God of the tithe, God’s people were living under a curse! (Malachi 3:9).
All God asks is that you give Him the first tenth (10%) of your income or increase. When you obey, He will bless you more than you can imagine. Doesn’t living under a blessing sound better than living under a curse!
Instead of robbing God, why not bless Him instead! God goes one step further; He wants to bless you so much that He even dares you to try it! Malachi 3:10 says: “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!” (Malachi 3:8-12; Deuteronomy 14:22). Dare to trust God, He can't wait to open the windows of heaven and pour out His favor and blessing on you!

What does tithing represent to God?
What does the word tithe mean? The word tithe literally means tenth in Hebrew. A tithe is 10% of your income. The tithe is given to your local church. Tithing supports the ministries, needs, and work of the local church. Tithes also pays salaries to pastors and other workers. Many churches use a portion of the tithes to support missions, outreaches and to support to the community around them.
The first part of Malachi 3:10 says: “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in My Temple.”
By tithing you are obeying what God says. Proverbs 3:9 says: “Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce” The best part means the first part, this is the first tenth not the last part if anything is left over.
Tithing isn’t a way to earn God’s love—you already have it. He showed you the extent of His love by sending Jesus to save all people. Tithing isn’t meant to be a legalistic thing or leverage to earn God’s favor. God warns us not to act like the Pharisees who were fanatics about tithing but overlooked more important things like showing humility, love and mercy. (Matthew 23:23)
Tithing is an act of faith and trust. It recognizes that God is your provider and you can rely on Him to give you even more than you need. Tithing shows that you believe God is your source for everything you need. The poor widow did exactly that by giving all she had to live on. Just as Jesus saw her act of love, obedience and trust, He sees your act of faith when you tithe. (Luke 21:4). Jesus said that He knows what you need before you even ask! (Matthew 6:8).
Tithing shows the condition and attitude of your heart. God doesn’t want you to be miserable and give out of obligation. It is important especially for young people, to understand that the amount (big or small) of your tithe isn’t important to God. If you make a dollar and give ten cents, that is equally accepted and blessed by God the same as a wealthy person who tithes hundreds or thousands of dollars. The widow gave two mites which were the smallest valued coins and Jesus took note and commended her, not the wealthy givers, for what she gave! 2 Corinthians 8:12 says, “Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don’t have.” That needs to be emphasized; give according to what you have, not what you don’t have!
The second part of Malachi 3:10 shows us how important tithing is for you and how eager God is for you to trust Him so He can bless you. When you tithe God says, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!”
God doesn’t need your money or possessions; He already owns everything! (Psalm 24:1; 1 Corinthians 10:26). God asks you to tithe because He knows how it will bless you and release joy in your heart. Go ahead, put God to the test!

What is God's response to my giving?
Did you know that God promises to give back to you when you give? Yes, it is true, but it is important to understand that He has always given to us and it is not based on anyone's giving to Him! Romans 5:8 says, But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” What was the world doing to deserve His generous and perfect gift? Sinning! What did God give? His only Son. What did Jesus give? His life for us. His giving is based on His love and nature... period. It is not because you or anyone else has done or given anything to deserve it.
When you give it is pleasing to God and His response is to give you even more. Why? So that you can be generous in your giving to Him and to others in need. (2 Corinthians 9:10-11). Proverbs 19:17 says: “If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord—and He will repay you!” Though it should never be your motive for giving, God promises to bless you when you give.
Luke 6:38 says: “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” There is joy in giving generously and this verse makes it even more exciting. God doesn’t just give a little or even moderately, He returns your gift packed down and shaken together--overflowing! As this verse says, it is up to you how much you will receive back… a little or overflowing, more than you can imagine!
2 Corinthians 9:6 gives us a different way to understand giving and receiving. This verse compares giving to a famer planting crops. “Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.” God is waiting to bless us beyond what we can imagine when we have a heart to generously give.

What is the best motivation in the Bible for us to give to God?
Who is our model for giving… God! God loved us so much that He gave His only Son that we might be saved! (John 3:16). It is the ultimate gift ever given. It can never be topped. God willingly gave the gift; He gave us this wonderful, unspeakable gift instead of giving us what we earned or deserved. Romans 6:23 says: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” We deserved to die but because He chose to give His only Son, we received abundant life, here on Earth and forever in heaven.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says: “God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” Yes, God gave us the perfect gift and He continues to generously give us gifts today. (James 1:17).
The poor widow dropped her two small coins (mites) into the offering. Jesus took note because He knew it was all she had to give. (Mark 12:43-44). She sacrificed all she had out of love and trust for God. God sacrificed His Son out of love for us. Jesus was the only one who could save us.
This is our motivation to give back to Him, out of love, trust and thanksgiving for His amazing, perfect gift!
Romans 5:15 says: But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and His gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.” God has given from day one of the Earth and He continues to give to us today and for all eternity in heaven.
